What made you want to become a zoo keeper; was there a particular experience that helped you make this decision?
 
When I was little I always said I wanted to be a vet.  The more I learned about the many career paths I could take, I realized I wanted to work more with exotic animals in a zoo setting.

What was the craziest thing that has ever happened to you at Gatorland?

It is hard to name just one thing because lots of things we do at work seem crazy to other people, but to us it’s just part of our job.  I’ve helped catch, and jump on the back of, a 10 foot Saltwater Crocodile, gotten spit on by the llama, helped baby alligators hatch out of the egg, handled venomous snakes, helped with medical check ups on our black bear, and wrangled flamingos for wing clipping.  Everyday is different and exciting!

What is your favorite animal at Gatorland and why?

It is hard to pick just one, but George, our Savannah Monitor, is one of my favorites.  He has a great personality and loves to be held.  I’ve done training with him and he’s really fun to work with.  Our African Dwarf Crocodile is another favorite of mine; he is very stubborn and has a “tough guy” attitude for a little croc.

If you had a choice to travel anywhere in the world to study animals, where would you go and what animal would you study?

I would love to study all the crocodilian species in the wild; there are 23 species from all over the globe.  I am also very interested in marine mammals and would love to travel on a research vessel in the ocean.

What is the best part of working here at Gatorland?

The best part is that I really love my job.  It’s fun to come to work everyday because each day brings new and different challenges. Caring for animals and doing what is best for their well being is rewarding, and, gaining an animals trust, especially a crocodilian, is an added bonus.

Have you ever had any close calls working with alligators or any other animal here at Gatorland?

I have been scratched up by iguana nails and bitten by quite a few birds, but nothing serious, thank goodness.  When cleaning the snake room and working with the venomous snakes one will occasionally strike at you and that always gets your adrenaline pumping!

What made you decide to work with alligators?

I wanted to work with any and all animals, and at Gatorland we get to work with about 60 different species; alligators just happen to be one of them.  The more I learn about them and work with them the more I love it.  They are an amazing species and so little is known about them. I love being able to educate people so that both their knowledge of, and respect for, the animals will grow.

What kind of pets do you have at home?

I have a Boston terrier, a Maine coon cat, a bearded dragon, and a ball python.

What kind of hobbies do you have?

I love photography especially black and white.  I would love to have my own dark room in my house.

Do you have any special talents?

My last job I was a dog groomer, I am really good at it!  I groomed for about three years and still do it for friend’s dogs occasionally.

Do you have someone who inspired you to get in to this field?

Doug Seus is probably the person who set the light bulb off in my head; I could actually have a career as a zookeeper and animal trainer. I saw his documentary on TV a long time ago and have read interviews with him. His kindness and passion for his animals really inspired me.  If you’re lucky enough to find a job you really love, you’re able to enjoy it without feeling like you’re working. Who could ask for more?

What made you want to become a zoo keeper; was there a particular experience that helped you make this decision?

As a child I would watch Mutual of Omaha’s “Wild Kingdom” and I was always fascinated by what they did. I always wanted to be one of those people.

What was the craziest thing that has ever happened to you at Gatorland?

I have been working at Gatorland for six years and lots of things have happened to me, but, the craziest would have to be when a guest made the comment that our Llama was not a Llama, but an Emu. True story!

What is your favorite animal at Gatorland and why?

I truly love all the animals that I work with but one of my favorites would have to be the Crested Peking Ducks. Over the years I have incubated and hatched out over a dozen of them at work and at home. As ducklings, they “quack me up”!

If you had a choice to travel anywhere in the world to study animals, where would you go and what animal would you study?

The world if full of amazing places and strange and fascinating animals; one of those places is Sulawesi. I would love to study and photograph the large fruit bats living there.

What is the best part of working here at Gatorland?

For me it would have to be meeting all the different kinds of people from all the different parts of the world. I get to talk to everyone, ask where they come from and learn a little about them; it’s great!

Have you ever had any close calls working with alligators or any other animal here at Gatorland?

Yes! When you work with animals of any kind you run the risk of having close calls. Ask any Zoo Keeper and the answer is almost always the same. It’s part of our job. Personally, I have probably been bitten more times by birds than any other animals combined.

What made you decide to work with alligators?

Nothing in particular; I wanted to work with animals in general and Gatorland happens to be home to more alligators than any other animals.

What kind of pets do you have at home?

At the moment, none! I keep plenty of animals here at work. In the past I’ve kept dogs, snakes, rodents of one kind or another, Iguanas, and of course, ducks.
 
What kind of hobbies do you have?

I love arts and crafts, painting and photography.

Do you have any special talents?

I can speak two languages fluently and I can understand a little Italian and Portuguese.

Do you have someone who inspired you to get in to this field?

A lot of great naturalists inspired me to learn more about the different animals I like. Marlon Perkings and Jacques Cousteau are just two of the many I would watch on television. Recently I had the honor of meeting Jack Hannah, another one of my favorites!
 

What made you want to become a zoo keeper; was there a particular experience that helped you make this decision?

Since I was a child I have wanted to work with animals. The hard part for me was deciding what exactly I wanted to do with animals. I’ve found that a zoo keeper gets to do a little bit of everything… one minute I am feeding alligators and the next I get to train a Black Bear.

What was the craziest thing that has ever happened to you at Gatorland?

One time we were moving some alligators to a new pool when I slipped and fell face first into the pool of gators. I couldn’t get my footing to get out so my coworker had to pull me out of the pool. It was pretty scary at the time, but once I was out and safe, we couldn’t stop laughing! Good thing it was a hot day ’cause I was dripping wet from head to toe.

What is your favorite animal at Gatorland and why?

I can’t choose just one favorite animal here, but I can at least narrow it down to four. Orwell Roscoe Pancake III, the striped skunk, because he is so cute and loves to cuddle, Babe, the Jacobs Four-Horned Sheep, she is such a sweetheart, Judy the Florida Black Bear, a true gentle giant, and finally, Harley the harlequin macaw because he is a beautiful bird with a big mouth and a serious attitude; but I love him.

If you had a choice to travel anywhere in the world to study animals, where would you go and what animal would you study?

I would love to travel on a research vessel and study marine mammals; specifically whales and dolphins.

What is the best part of working here at Gatorland?

The best thing about working at Gatorland is the amazing animals I get to work with.

Have you ever had any close calls working with alligators or any other animal here at Gatorland?

I have had several bites from macaws and a small bite from an Eastern Indigo snake; luckily none of them were very serious.

What made you decide to work with alligators?

I want to work with any and all animals at some point in my life so alligators are another animal I can check off my list!

What kind of pets do you have at home?

I have a 2 cats named Harley and Bitsy, a German Shepherd named Tank, and a ferret named Napoleon. I would love a zoo at my house, but right now they are all I have time for.

What kind of hobbies do you have?

My husband and I love to ride motorcycles and I also love scuba diving.

Do you have any special talents?

I am actually pretty musically inclined. I can play the bass guitar, the standing bass and the trombone.

Do you have someone who inspired you to get in to this field?

Jane Goodall has been an inspiration to me. Her work with animals, and her understanding of them, just amazes me. Closer to home though is my Dad; animals just seem to love him and I probably got my passion for animals from him.
