Taking Flight at Gatorland

Taking Flight at Gatorland
Thousands of birds flock back to the theme park to nest and raise their young amongst the alligators

Orlando, Florida – (February 23, 2010):  The Alligator Breeding Marsh & Bird Sanctuary is in full swing this month as thousands of birds flock back to Gatorland to nest for the opening of Birding Season.

The park had just two nests of wading birds when it opened the alligator marsh in 1991.  Today, that number has soared to the thousands, making Gatorland home to the largest colony of wading birds in Central Florida.

“This is a spectacular way to watch wild birds building nests and raising their young from distances of just a few feet,” points out Mark McHugh, Gatorland’s President & CEO.

Ironically, the birds are known to flourish in the natural environment of the ten-acre breeding marsh. Alligators protect the nests from predators, such as raccoons, foxes and opossums.  It is not unusual to see a great egret enjoying a free ride perched on the back of an alligator.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience nature at its best during Birding Season at Gatorland, which runs from February through July.  Numerous packages and promotions are now available for photographers at any level including a “Dawn to Dusk” birding pass, photographer workshops and pass programs, guided tours, and group education sessions.  For more information, please contact the Group Sales Department at (407) 855-5496 extension 226.

Mile of Monsters opens at Gatorland

February 11th, 2010

THEY’RE COMING…

Giant Alligators Invade Gatorland for the opening of the Mile of Monsters featuring ten of the most notorious reptiles in captivity

Orlando, Florida: It’s a well-known fact that Gatorland is home to thousands of alligators and crocodiles, but did you know that some of the biggest and baddest reptiles alive can be found ruling the lakes and exhibits at the Alligator Capital of the World?

On February 13, Gatorland will kick off a brand new, one-of-a-kind self guided tour through the lair of some of the theme park’s most notorious reptiles including, Chester, the Terror from Tampa, and his distant cousin Mania from Miami, whose split personality can take him from mild to maniac in just seconds.

“We have some of the most dangerous alligators and crocodiles with some amazing personalities and incredible stories,” says Mark McHugh, Gatorland’s president & CEO.  “These guys have scared employees almost to death and bitten handlers, while some are known dog killers and others have captured worldwide media attention.  These stories are just too good to keep to ourselves, so we thought it would be great to share the legends of these renegades with our visitors.”

At its opening, the Mile of Monsters will feature the stories of ten large alligators and crocodiles whose unique antisocial personalities have left those who work closest with them in need of therapy.

At its completion, the Mile of Monsters will include a total of twenty-four of the most feared reptiles to grace the waterways of Gatorland, each with a unique story sure to keep you up at night!

Alisa King, of Orlando Wins the Name the White Gator Contest at Gatorland

August 14th, 2009

ORLANDO, FL.: After some intense deliberation, the team at Gatorland has selected the name Trezo Je, submitted by Alisa King of Orlando, as the official name of the fourth giant, white leucistic alligator located at the White Gator Swamp at Gatorland.

“When I read about the leucistic alligators’ arrival at Gatorland, the article in the Orlando Sentinel really emphasized their eyes stating that good luck may come to those who gaze into them; so I began thinking of different words associated with good luck  and the word ‘treasure’ soon became a focal point,” states King. “In the Cajun language the name ‘Trezo Je’ means ‘treasures eye’; a perfect name for this beautiful, rare reptile.”

The contest launched a nationwide hunt for the perfect name for this rare, ten foot alligator in the spotlight, and a chance to get up-close and personal with one of the white alligators featured in the White Gator Swamp at Gatorland.  Hordes of entries from across the country were submitted and from those, the name Trezo Je was selected as our winner.

Alisa and her family will take part in a ceremony officially naming the incredible alligator on Sunday, August 16 at 12:30pm. Her visit will include the first one-on-one encounter by a guest inside of den of the huge reptile with alligator expert Mike Hileman, Director of Entertainment at Gatorland.
